A suicide bomber killed at least 30 people and injured 88 Saturday in a crowded area in eastern Afghanistan, provincial officials said. The attack occurred in Jalalabad, the provincial capital of Nangarhar province, dpa reported. "The bomber blew himself up at a rush time in the center of the city where several government offices, a private bank branch and marketplaces are located," provincial government spokesman Ahmad Zia Abdulzai said. "Most of the dead and injured are innocent civilians, but police might have also suffered casualties as the attack took place close to the checkpoint," Abdulzai said. He did not know what the target was, saying it was under investigation. Police spokesman Hazrat Hossein Mashreqiwal said a bomb attached to a motorbike exploded a few minutes after the suicide attack, "but did not have casualties." He said the death toll could rise.
