A fast-moving coastal storm was forecast to hit several major cities in the northeastern United States with a mix of snow, sleet, and rain on Saturday in the densely-populated region's first significant winter storm of the season. The biggest snowfall amount is expected in the state of Massachusetts, but forecasters warned that temperatures hovering near freezing could make for icy driving conditions across the wider region. As it moves northeast along the U.S. east coast, the storm is expected to drop 2.5 to 10 centimeters of snow and ice in Philadelphia on Saturday morning before changing to rain. The storm was forecast to bring 7.5 to 10 centimeters of snow to New York City and 10 to 15 centimeters to Boston, with higher amounts in central Massachusetts, before moving out into the Atlantic Ocean by early Sunday. The storm is expected to begin as snow across much of the region, with area east of the north-south Interstate-95 highway receiving mostly rain. Forecasters say precipitation accumulation amounts will depend on how quickly the rain line moves west.
