The European Union's sea border patrol mission that was launched last month has rescued more than 3,200 migrants, Italian Interior Minister Angelino Alfano said Monday. Triton was launched by the EU's border agency Frontex on November 1. "With Triton, 3,226 people have already been rescued since November 1," dpa quoted Alfano as saying at an event in Agrigento, Sicily. Earlier this month, 16 people were found dead on a dinghy in the open sea between Libya and Italy. Their presumed cause of death was hypothermia and dehydration, suggesting that they had been adrift at sea for quite some time.
