Zambia will conduct presidential elections on January 20 to find a replacement for president Michael Sata, who died in office three weeks ago, the country's acting president announced Tuesday. According to dpa, the ruling Patriotic Front has not yet chosen a candidate. Three leading members of the party have expressed interest, including Sata's nephew, Miles Sampa, the deputy minister of commerce. Sata's predecessor, Rupiah Banda, 77, who ruled the southern African country from 2008 to 2011, has announced his candidacy for the opposition Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD). Sata died on October 28 in London, where he was receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness. He was 77.
