Swedish defence contractor Saab said Monday it has signed a 39.3-million-kronor (5.4-billion-dollar) deal with Brazil to develop and produce 36 Gripen Next Generation fighter aircraft, dpa reported. The deal was announced shortly after Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff won a presidential election run-off. In December, a tentative deal was announced. In the final round of contestants, Brazil had also considered US firm Boeing's F-18 Super Hornet, and Rafale fighter jets made by France's Dassault. The Gripen jet is a single-engine fighter that can be used for air-to-air, air-sea and air-to-ground missions.
