The U.N. refugee agency on Monday said that is has, for the first time, begun sending aid into Libya from Tunisia to help the tens of thousands displaced by weeks of fighting in Tripoli. The International Medical Corporation (IMC) on Saturday organized the arrival of the first convoys carrying medical supplies and relief items from the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). The trucks carrying the aid went to the town of Zawiya, where 12,000 people sought shelter away from the fighting in Tripoli. The aid operations were crucial in paving the "way for other humanitarian aid to reach affected populations who are stranded and in dire need of assistance," said Saado Quol, UNHCR's acting chief of mission in Libya. The fighting in Tripoli has resulted in the loss of lives, and 2 million people may be at risk of food shortages if the fighting continues in Libya, according to the Red Cross.
