A magnitude-6 earthquake struck Tokyo and wide areas of Japan early Monday, dpa quoted the Meteorological Agency as saying. Seventeen people were injured in the capital and suburbs, Kyodo News agency quoted local authorities as saying, but damage was not yet reported and no tsunami warning was issued. The magnitude was revised downward from an earlier estimate of 6.2, the agency said. The epicentre of the 5:18 am (2018 GMT Sunday) quake was located near Izu Oshima Island, 100 kilometres south of Tokyo, the agency said. It was the strongest quake since a magnitude-9 earthquake and tsunami struck north-eastern Japan on March 11, 2011, the Kyodo News agency reported. The quake prompted Tokyo's subway systems to be briefly suspended, while some other train services, including Shinkansen bullet trains, were delayed or cancelled, local media reported. The Japan Atomic Power Company said no abnormalities were detected at its Tokai No 2 nuclear plant, 120 kilometres north-east of Tokyo.
