Floods caused by torrential rain in Burundi's capital Bujumbura has killed at least 60 people and injured hundreds, dpa quoted the Red Cross as saying Tuesday. "Our rescue teams have so far counted between 60 and 70 dead," Anselme Katiyunguruza, Burundi Red Cross secretary general, told dpa. "Many of the bodies were discovered in the mud." Katiyunguruza said the death toll could rise. The rains hit on Sunday, causing three rivers overflow and inundating the city's northern suburbs. Katiyunguruza estimated that several hundred people were injured and around 1,000 houses destroyed, leaving at least 12,500 were left homeless. The government has declared two days of mourning, starting Tuesday. Heavy rains are expected to continue in the East African country over the next few months.
