A 48-hour strike on the London Underground caused transport misery for millions of commuters in the morning rush hour on Wednesday, with only around a third of trains running, dpa reported. Tube workers went on strike at 9 pm (2100 GMT) on Tuesday, after unions failed to come to an agreement with Transport for London over hundreds of planned job cuts and ticket office closures. Thousands of people crammed into tube stations as they waited for trains. Several stations were shut because of overcrowding, while many passengers were unable to board trains because they were already so packed. The tube network usually carries about 4.5 million passengers every day, more than half of the British capital's 8 million-strong population. Another 48-hour strike is planned for February 11.
