At least six people were killed and a further four injured Tuesday during a police raid on a Rio de Janeiro "favela" (slum), local authorities said. The four-hour raid in Morro do Juramento resulted in a shootout in which six people were killed and four others - including two police officers - were injured, dpa reported. The authorities subsequently seized drugs, grenades, guns and several AK-47 rifles. Police officers were seeking to arrest members of a drug gang suspected of attacking a police station Sunday and killing one police officer.
