The U.N. decision to shelter 85,000 civilians on its peacekeeping bases in South Sudan during recent fighting saved thousands or tens of thousands of lives, the U.N. peacekeeping chief said Monday. "Deaths that don't occur don't make news," Undersecretary-General for peacekeeping Herve Ladsous said at the conclusion of a two-day visit to South Sudan, commending the U.N. Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) for sheltering the civilians on 10 bases around the world's newest country. "Had this not been done, then it would have been many thousands or ten thousands of civilians who would have been killed. Difficult as it may have been, as it is, as it could be in future, I think it shows a great example of the sort of thing we have to do," Ladsous said.
