Janel Yellen was sworn in Monday to a term as chair of the U.S. central bank, the Federal Reserve (Fed) said in a statement. Yellen, the Fed deputy chair, succeeds Ben Bernanke to become the first woman to lead the Fed in its 100-year history. Her term as chair ends in 2018. She may be re-nominated for additional terms. The oath of office was administered by Fed Governor Daniel Tarullo, the senior member of the central bank's seven-member board. Yellen was nominated to head the central bank by President Barack Obama in October.
