US President Barack Obama on Friday named experienced central banker and economist Stanley Fischer to serve as the vice chairman of the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed), the White House said. President Obama nominated Lael Brainard, who served as the Treasury Department's top official for international affairs, to serve on the Fed board, and he also named Fed Governor Jerome Powell to a new term on the board, ending in 2028. The Fed vice chairmanship became vacant when Janet Yellen was approved by the U.S. Senate on Monday to become the next chair of the U.S. central bank, replacing Ben Bernanke, who steps down at the end of January.
