The European Union on Thursday offered to send a team of observers to monitor Myanmar's elections scheduled for 2015, according to dpa. The EU asked the Myanmar government "if they were interested in having an election monitoring mission," said EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who is heading the first mission of an EU-Myanmar Task Force this week. The EU wants to assist Myanmar in rural development, education, and governance, and support peace building with the ethnic minority groups, European Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs said. Piebalgs' estimated that the EU's financial support could reach 90 million euros (121 million US dollars) per year.
