The international community has pledged more than 54 million dollars in emergency assistance to the Philippines struggling to deal with the aftermath of Typhoon Haiyan, the government said Tuesday. The Department of Foreign Affairs said assistance came in the form of cash, relief goods, as well as medical and rescue teams. The aid was from 28 countries, plus the European Union and four international aid agencies, according to dpa. The European Union announced Tuesday an additional 10 million euros (13.4 million dollars) in assistance for reconstruction work on top of its initial 3 million euros of aid. Japan has already dispatched a medical team to the typhoon-ravaged country and will also give 10 million dollars to provide evacuees with emergency shelters and other necessities through international organizations, the government said.
