AlHijjah 18, 1434, Oct 23, 2013, SPA -- A suicide bomber Wednesday killed two UN peacekeepers from Chad and one child in Mali's northern town of Tessalit, security sources said. The attack, which injured three other Chadian peacekeepers, took place at the busy marketplace of Tessalit, a town in the West African nation's fragile Kidal region, which is dominated by separatist Tuareg rebel groups. "A suicide bomber detonated his [explosives] belt at a checkpoint monitored by Chadian soldiers," a Malian security officer said on the condition of anonymity, adding that the bomber also was killed. According to dpa, Mali's security forces were placed on high alert after the incident, the army's public relations unit said. "Since the attack, patrolling intensified in the city and beyond," a resident of Tessalit who did not want to be named said by telephone.
