AlQa'dah 29, 1434, Oct 5, 2013, SPA -- Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau issued a land warning for Typhoon Fitow Saturday, warning that the passage of the storm will bring heavy rains to northern and north-eastern Taiwan, dpa reported. According to the bureau, Fitow is moving in a west-north-westerly direction toward northern Taiwan, at a speed of 18 kilometres per hour. On Sunday afternoon, the storm will be centered about 240 kilometers east of Taipei. Weather forecasters said that Fitow might skirt northern Taiwan, but that torrential rains in northern and north-eastern Taiwan are foreseeable. The bureau issued a special warning for heavy rains to residents in: the capital, Taipei; adjacent Xinbei City; and north-eastern Yilan County. It anticipated accumulated precipitation of some 350 millimetres through Sunday. According to the Central Emergency Operation Centre, four flights connecting Taiwan and Okinawa in Japan have been cancelled due to the approach of Fitow as of Saturday afternoon.
