Chancellor Angela Merkel, leader of the centre-right Christian Democrats (CDU), is expected to remain chancellor for a third term. Polling stations close at 6 pm (1800 GMT) Sunday. Some 61.8 million people are eligible to vote. As many as a quarter of all votes are likely to have been cast in advance and sent in by mail.
