U.S. stocks closed slightly higher Tuesday. In U.S. economic news, manufacturing data gave investors additional signs of a global economic rebound. Manufacturing data showed stronger expansion in the sector. In corporate news, Verizon said it will pay $130 billion to take full control of Vodafone, and Microsoft said it was buying Nokia's mobile phone business for $7.2 billion. It is the second-biggest merger ever. The dollar gained ground against the euro and the yen, but lost ground versus the pound. Light sweet crude oil for October delivery rose 89 cents to $108.54 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold futures climbed $15.90 to $1,412.00 an ounce. The Dow Jones industrial average moved up 23.65, or 0.16 percent, to 14,833.96. The broader Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 6.8, or 0.42 percent, to 1,639.77. The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index gained 22.74, or 0.63 percent, to 3,612.61.
