The death toll rose to nine in a shipwreck off the coast of southern Vietnam over the weekend, authorities said Monday. The last body was recovered early Monday, Senior Lieutenant Colonel Pham Long Bao, head of Can Gio District Coast Guard, said. The boat was making the hour-long trip from the coast of Tien Giang province to Vung Tau city and was 10 kilometres from shore when it capsized in high waves on Friday evening, dpa reported. Twenty-one people, including an American couple, were rescued early the next day while clinging to the upturned boat. The vessel had a capacity for 18 people, police said. One survivor was quoted as saying that she didn't have a life jacket, and another passenger who gave her his later drowned.
