Six rebels were killed in a clash overnight with government troops in the northern Philippines, an army commander said Wednesday. The clash erupted Tuesday evening in a village in Camiling town in Tarlac province, 135 kilometres north of Manila, dpa quoted Colonel Henry Sabare as saying. The fighting lasted until dawn Wednesday when troops recovered the bodies of the guerrillas, Sabare said. In the southern city of Davao, 990 kilometres south of Manila, rebels freed five police officers they captured June 17 at a roadblock. The policemen were on their way to a market when they were abducted. The officers were turned over to Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte, said Captain Severino David, a regional military spokesman. "They are currently at hospital," he said. "We are having their medical condition checked."
