A weakening Tropical Storm Chantal is starting to dissipate but could still bring heavy rains to the Dominican Republic and Haiti on Wednesday. The disorganized storm system, moving rapidly through the Caribbean at 47 kilometers per hour (kph), could drop up to 25 centimeters of rain on the two countries that share the island of Hispaniola, the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC) said early Wednesday. Chantal's current tracking map shows the storm hitting Cuba on Thursday before turning sharply to the north and brushing the Florida coastline on Friday and Saturday. Early Wednesday, Chantal was about 225 kilometers south of the Dominican Republic. The storm's winds slowed to 72 kph, and forecasters said the system may weaken further into a tropical wave. However, tropical-storm warnings remain in effect for the Dominican Republic, Haiti, and several islands. Chantal is expected to produce 7.5 to 15 centimeters of rain over Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, the southeastern Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti, the NHC said. Isolated amounts of 25 centimeters are possible over Hispaniola.
