Twelve people were killed Saturday when a van veered off a highway and plunged down a ravine in the northern Philippines, police said. Seven people were injured in the accident along the national highway in Benguet province, 240 kilometres north of Manila, dpa reported. Police said "the driver lost control of the vehicle due to a sudden downpour and foggy environment," causing the van to plunge into the ravine. Ten passengers died on the spot, while two succumbed to their injuries in hospital. One passenger was unhurt after jumping off the vehicle, police said.
