Authorities suspect foul play in a fatal bus fire that claimed 47 lives and hospitalized 34 in eastern China, state media said Saturday. Initial investigation showed the accelerant for the fire was gasoline, while the bus engine ran on diesel, a government official was quoted by official Xinhua news agency as saying. He said the tires and fuel tank were intact after the fire, which officials were treating as a "serious criminal case." Xinhua quoted a survivor as saying she smelled gasoline then saw fire spreading rapidly. The incident occurred aboard a rapid transit system bus in the Fujian province port city of Xiamen on Friday evening.
