The International Conference on United Nations cooperation with counter-terrorism centers began this morning its deliberations at the Ritz Carlton Hotel in Riyadh. On behalf of Prince Saud Al-Faisal, Minister of Foreign Affairs, the conference was opened by Prince Dr. Turki bin Mohammad bin Saud, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for multilateral relations, in the presence and participation of Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and 49 countries around the world. The conference aims primarily to encourage partners to contribute to capacity building, and comes in coordination between the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United Nations. During four sessions, the conference will discuss the four pillars essential for the International Strategy for combating terrorism which represent the themes of the conference and include measures to address the conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism, measures to prevent and combat terrorism, measures to build the capacity of States to prevent and combat terrorism and strengthen the role of the United Nations in this connection and measures to ensure respect of human rights for all and the rule of law as the fundamental basis for the fight against terrorism. The Conference gathers successful international, regional and national centers in the fight against terrorism under the umbrella of the United Nations Centre; discusses ways of cooperation among all international centers involved; and reviews various centers' capabilities, field of specialization and the successful methods they use in the fight against terrorism. --More
