Traces of horse meat have been found in 29 of 2,501 beef products tested in Britain, the Food Standards Agency (FSA) said Friday, according to dpa. "The results show that the overwhelming majority of beef products in this country do not contain horse," said FSA chief Catherine Brown. "The examples we have had are totally unacceptable. But they are the exceptions." These included lasagne and beef burgers served by the pub and hotel group Whitbread, the BBC reported. Meanwhile meat pies were withdrawn from the menu at schools in the county of Lancashire, after one was found to contain traces of horse. The 29 items that tested positive all contained more than 1 per cent of horse meat, the FSA said, adding that another 950 tests were in progress. -- SPA
