A 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck off the Solomon Islands on Friday, according to the US Geological Survey. The quake hit at 22:12 (1112 GMT) at a depth of nine kilometres near Santa Cruz and 434 kilometres off Kira Kira, the USGS said. The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said that no "destructive widespread tsunami threat exists". The shallow tremblor follows a powerful 8-magnitude earthquake on Wednesday, which sent a devastating tsunami over the island of Lata.
