Bangladesh's banking regulator is to withdraw suggestions for a planned law that would allow capital punishment for currency counterfeiters after the German central bank threatened to stop its cooperation with anti-counterfeiting efforts, dpa cited reports on Friday. Quoting a senior Bangladeshi central bank official, state-run news agency Bangladesh Sangbad Sangstha (BSS) stated that authorities had already withdrawn draft legislation proposing the death penalty for currency counterfeiters. The Bundesbank, Germany's central bank, on Thursday reportedly said that it would not go ahead with its offer of consultation and training of Bangladeshi central bank officials after media reported that the South Asian country was planning to include execution among the possible punishments for currency counterfeiting. The German bank said it would not take part in the programme, scheduled to begin next month, unless the proposed legislation was dropped. -- SPA
