Belarus' consul in Rio de Janeiro has drowned while swimming at a beach in the Brazilian city, AP reported. An official with Rio's health secretariat said Monday that Serguei Gurevsky died after taking a swim in the waters off of Barra de Tijuca beach a day earlier. Lifeguards pulled Gurevsky from the water alive after noticing he was struggling amid heavy waves and strong currents, but he died before reaching a nearby hospital, said the official. He declined to give his name in accordance with policy at the secretariat. The coroner's office has released his body to consular officials. It is expected to be sent to Belarus for burial.
