A 20-year-old man opened fire inside two classrooms at the Connecticut elementary school where his mother taught Friday, killing 26 people, 20 of whom were children. The killer, identified by law enforcement as Adam Lanza, was armed with two handguns and committed suicide at the Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut. Authorities said that another person was found dead at a second scene, bringing the total death toll to 28. The shooting was the United States' second-deadliest at a school, exceeded only by the 2007 massacre at Virginia Tech that resulted in the death of 33 people. “Our hearts are broken today," President Barack Obama told reporters at the White House, as he struggled to maintain his composure. The president called for “meaningful action" to prevent future such shootings.
