Around 20 million Algerians were called on to elect members to 1,541 communes or councils, which are led by mayors, and 48 wilayas (regions) which are led by centrally-appointed prefects, dpa reported. Fifty-two parties fielded candidates but only two - President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's ruling National Liberation Front (FLN) and the allied National Rally for Democracy - presented lists in every constituency. Interior Minister Dahou Ould Kablia said he hoped for a turnout of between 40 and 45 per cent, on a par with the last local elections in 2007. -- SPA
