AlHijjah 12, 1433, Oct 28, 2012, SPA -- New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Sunday called for mandatory evacuations of low-lying areas of New York City as Hurricane Sandy headed for the United States' eastern coast after wreaking havoc in the Caribbean. According to dpa, the evacuation order affects approximately 375,000 city dwellers living in parts of lower Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island. "This is a serious and dangerous storm," Bloomberg said Sunday. The storm surge was expected to reach more than 3 metres in height. Meanwhile, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo ordered schools to remain shut on Monday and public transport to be suspended as Hurricane Sandy approached.
