AlHijjah 2, 1433, Oct 18, 2012, SPA -- A peacekeeper killed in the restive Darfur region of Sudan has been identified as a South African national, the Department for International Relations in Pretoria confirmed on Thursday. According to dpa, the soldier with the joint United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission was killed in an ambush the previous day by unknown militants. His team had been on its way to investigate reports of violence in a remote village. The mission has called for the government of Sudan to launch an investigation, and a similar appeal was issued by UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon and the South African government. There has been no comment as yet from Khartoum. The UN-AU mission said three soldiers were also injured in the attack.
