AlQa'dah 12, 1433, Sep 28, 2012, SPA -- Former UN war crimes prosecutors Carla del Ponte was appointed Friday as a new member of the panel collecting evidence of human rights violations in Syria, the UN human rights council said in Geneva. The announcement came shortly after the council had called for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Syria to be prosecuted, possibly by the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Swiss legal expert del Ponte previously served as prosecutor of the international criminal tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda. Thai human rights expert Vitit Muntabhorn was also added as a new member of the panel, in addition to its two current members: Paulo Sergio Pinheiro from Brazil; and Karen Koning AbuZayd from the United States.
