Switzerland wants former UN chief prosecutor Carla del Ponte to be included in the United Nations Commission investigating human rights abuses in Syria, the country's Foreign Ministry confirmed Tuesday in Bern. Del Ponte led the prosecution of the UN tribunal for the former Yugoslavia until 2006. As Switzerland strongly advocates investigating and punishing Syrian human rights violations, the country "proposes that Ms del Ponte supports the commission's work," Swiss Foreign Ministry spokesman Tilman Renz said Monday in a television interview. The proposal was launched amid discussions at the UN in Geneva on prolonging and possibly strengthening the mandate of the commission, which has produced detailed reports on alleged crimes in Syria, according to a report of dpa.
