The Philippines' oldest World War II veteran has passed away at the age of 111, dpa cited a government agency as saying Thursday. Alfonso Fabros died of pneumonia on August 9 at his home in the northern province of Nueva Ecija, the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office said. Fabros, born in February 1901, became a private in the Philippine army under the United States Armed Forces in the Far East when Japan invaded the South-East Asian US colony in 1941. He escaped when Japanese troops overran US forces in their last stand in Bataan province in 1942 and became a guerrilla fighter until the Philippines was liberated in 1945. The veterans affairs office said Fabros was receiving a pension from both the Philippines and the US for his services.
