US President Barack Obama traveled south on Monday to visit a region ravaged by Hurricane Isaac, while delegates began to gather ahead of the convention that will anoint him as the Democratic presidential nominee. Obama planned to spend Monday, the Labor Day holiday that marks the end of summer in the U.S., meeting with local officials in Louisiana, touring storm damage and viewing response and recovery efforts before addressing reporters, the White House said. Republican nominee Mitt Romney, fresh from his party's convention visited the state Friday. Obama's trip comes a day after he and Vice President Joe Biden campaigned separately across three battleground states and delegates descended on the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, North Carolina, for two days of partying before their first official meeting Tuesday in the Time Warner Cable Arena, according to a report of the Associated Press. The convention opens Tuesday with first lady Michelle Obama as a featured speaker. San Antonio, Texas, Mayor Julian Castro also is slated for that night.
