A wildfire has devoured more than 8,000 hectares of terrain in the northern Spanish province of Leon, local officials said Tuesday. According to dpa, the fire in Castrocontrigo burned down ecologically valuable hiking areas and pine forests containing trees that were more than 100 years old. Hundreds of firefighters and soldiers were battling the flames, which sent smoke to a distance of about 80 kilometres from the provincial capital Leon.
