Arish, Egypt, Ramadan 18, 1433, August 06, 2012, SPA -- About 15 officers from the police and central security force were killed Sunday in an attack on their checkpoints in the Sinai peninsula, news agencies and media reported. The state-run Al Ahram newspaper said that the attack killed 15 people and injured six. Militants attacked the checkpoints shortly after sunset while the guards were breaking their Ramadan fast in the northern Sinai town of Rafah, a security source told dpa. "The masked gunmen were driving two vehicles when they attacked the guards. They stole an armoured vehicle and then fired rocket-propelled grenades at a nearby army checkpoint," a witness told Al Ahram. The armed men later drove off towards the Karm Abu Salem border crossing, and fired some shots into Israel, security sources said. Army forces were deployed at the scene backed with air force personnel.
