Spanish firefighters were Tuesday getting wildfires under control around the country, while rescuers retrieved the body of a firefighter whose helicopter plunged into a water reservoir, dpa reported. Two wildfires have raged in the region of Valencia since last week, devouring about 50,000 hectares of vegetation. More than 3,000 people were preventively evacuated from the region, though many of them have now returned home. One of the fires was subsiding and flames were no longer visible, while the other had also lost intensity, according to a military unit participating in the firefighting effort. However, winds, low humidity and high temperatures hampered the extinguishing efforts. Rescuers retrieved the body of a pilot whose helicopter crashed into the Forata water reservoir on Monday. The remains of the helicopter were located in the water, while the body was found close to the reservoir. Another helicopter also crashed, but its two occupants survived and were hospitalized. The reasons for the accidents were not immediately known.
