Defense Secretary Philip Hammond said that Britain's army will be forced to rely more heavily on reservists and contractors in the future, AP reported. Hammond is expected to tell military experts Thursday that Britain will need to work closely with international partners and look to others to "provide the tail, where Britain is concentrating on providing the teeth" in defense. In excerpts released ahead of his speech at the Royal United Services Institute, Hammond acknowledges that whole units will disappear as the regular Army shrinks by 20,000 in the coming years. Hammond is expected to say that skills available in the reserves and from British contractors will need to be used "more systematically," and that Britain will invest 1.8 billion pounds ($2.8 million) in reserve forces over the next 10 years.
