RIYADH: The National Water Company (NWC) has completed 75 percent of the sanitary sewage network in north Jeddah.The SR4.3 billion project includes main and subsidiary sewage tunnels dedicated to districts south of Palestine Street and southern parts of Jeddah bordering King Abdul Aziz International Airport. These costs do not cover house connections. A company source said tenders will be issued to connect 139,000 houses in north Jeddah with the main sanitary sewage network. He said the company has already finished work on the 837-kilometer-long subsidiary network with tunnel sizes of between 2,000 and 3,500 millimeters. He said the length of the tunnel lines, which stretch from Al-Andalus District on King Abdul Aziz Road to the northern sewage pumping station, is 19.7 kilometers. He said 50 percent of the northern sewage pumping station, which is the fourth largest station in the world in terms of depth, has been completed. The total cost of the station is SR900 million. The station is expected to be fully operational in 2012 The station has been designed to transport the sewage from the northern districts through the main tunnel, which is connected to 10 gigantic pumps. The daily capacity of the pumps is between 750,000 to 1,000,000 cubic meters, he said. The station will pump water into the sewage water treatment station at King Abdul Aziz Airport, which has become operational at a cost of SR370 million, the source said.
