JEDDAH: Most bereaved families who lost relatives in the Nov. 2009 Jeddah flood disaster have collected their checks for SR1 million, Sheikh Ibrahim Al-Qani of the General Court in Jeddah has said. Some checks, however, are collecting dust due to family in-fighting. Al-Qani appealed to claimants who have not yet approached the court for payment to do so as soon as possible. “The issuing of the checks, which were written on the orders of King Abdullah, is a quick and easy process,” he said. Some families have reportedly failed to collect their checks due to arguments over which individual member should be entrusted with receiving them in his or her name. An official said that the court was working to resolve those cases and that until that time the checks would remain with the court. The list of persons entitled to the checks includes 58 Saudis, 14 Yemenis, seven Burmese nationals, seven Chadian nationals, six Pakistanis, six Indians, five Egyptians, four Sudanese, three Bangladeshis, one American, a Nigerian, an Indonesian, a Jordanian, a Moroccan and an Ethiopian.
