Inspection teams of Jeddah Municipality took 381 foreign workers into custody from the central fruit and vegetable market here Saturday. The workers, found to be in breach of the residency laws, were handed over to the Passports Department, Dr. Nasir Bin Muhammad Jarullah, Director General of Markets and Abattoirs in the municipality, said. The teams also checked on the hygienic conditions of shops in the market. Dr. Jarullah said the municipality teams thoroughly inspected 510 shops during the last month and found 22 of them involved in commercial swindling. About 250 shopkeepers were found to be selling prohibited goods and 151 shops were found violating hygienic rules. They were all penalized. The official added that 71 cartons of fruit, 73 cartons of vegetables, nine cartons of watermelons and 49 cartons of fodder were destroyed for being rotten and harmful to human health. The inspection teams also checked 1,008 cattle enclosures, 100 birdcages, eight cafeterias, three pharmacies and 81 shops selling coal and wood. Out of these, 16 shops were found in violation of municipality rules and penalized.
