Baghdatis moves into 2nd round

seeded Marcos Baghdatis of Cyprus beat Laurent Recouderc of France 6-4, 7-5 Tuesday to move into the second round of the Open de Nice.
Baghdatis was initially scheduled to play Mario Ancic, but the Croat withdrew because of a back injury and was replaced by Recouderc.
The Cypriot dropped serve only once and will next play Simon Greul of Germany.
Also, Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine defeated Andreas Seppi of Italy 7-5, 6-3 to reach the quarterfinals.
Alexandr Dolgopolov of Ukraine beat sixth-seeded Albert Montanes of Spain 6-3, 7-5 to move into the second round.
Frenchmen Richard Gasquet and Florent Serra also advanced to the second round.
Serra edged Illya Marchenko of Ukraine 7-5, 7-6 (4) and Gasquet routed Lukas Lacko of Slovakia 6-3, 6-0.
Li advances in Warsaw
In Poland, third-seeded Li Na's run of good form on European clay continued when the Chinese beat Ioana Raluca Olaru of Romania 7-6 (4), 6-0 to reach the second round of the rain-disrupted Warsaw Open Tuesday.
Next up for Li will be Katarzyna Piter, who defeated another local wild card, Marta Domachowska, 7-6 (3), 4-6, 7-5, in a match that was resumed from Monday, when rain halted play after two sets.
With heavy clouds hanging over the Legia Club, Tathiana Garbin of Italy defeated Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic 6-3, 6-4 and another Czech, Barbora Zahlavova Strycova, beat Andreja Klepac of Slovenia 6-3, 6-1.
Greta Arn of Hungary beat Petra Martic of Croatia 7-5, 6-7 (5), 6-3 in match that lasted just under three hours.
Bammer advances
In Strasbourg, sixth-seeded Sybille Bammer of Austria rallied to beat Pauline Parmentier of France 2-6, 6-4, 7-5 Tuesday and reach the second round of the Strasbourg International.
Julia Goerges of Germany and Dia Evtimova of Bulgaria also advanced. Goerges outlasted Maria Elena Camerin of Italy 5-7, 7-5, 6-1 and will next face Bammer, while Evtimova defeated Tatjana Malek of Germany 6-4, 7-5.
Fifth-seeded Anabel Medina Garrigues of Spain, Yvonne Meusburger of Austria and Sofia Arvidsson of Sweden also moved into the second round.
Medina Garrigues cruised past Sandra Zahlavova of the Czech Republic 6-1, 6-0, Meusburger beat Alla Kudryavtseva of Russia 6-4, 6-3, and Arvidsson routed Jill Craybas of the US 6-2, 6-1.
Craybas squandered her nine break points, while Arvidsson converted five of eight break chances.
Arvidsson will meet third-seeded Virginie Razzano of France, who defeated Chang Kai-chen of Taiwan 6-3, 3-6, 6-4.
Meusburger will take on Kristina Barrois of Germany, who edged Stephanie Foretz of France 6-2, 3-6, 7-6 (8). Barrois was scheduled to play fourth-seeded Peng Shuai, but the Chinese suffered from dizziness and withdrew.
Lucie Hradecka of the Czech Republic beat Julie Coin of France 7-5, 6-2 and will face Medina Garrigues.
In the late matches, eighth-seeded Elena Baltacha of Britain beat Sorana Cirstea of Romania 6-3, 7-5, and seventh-seeded Anastasija Sevastova of Latvia routed Mariana Duque Marino of Colombia 6-1, 6-1 in just 47 minutes.
Sevastova will meet Kristina Mladenovic of France, who outlasted Stefanie Voegele of Switzerland 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (5).
Mladenovic, the world's top-ranked junior and a junior French Open champion, rallied from a 5-2 deficit in the last set to force a tiebreaker. She won 101 points, to Voegele's 100.
US splits singles with Spain
In Germany, the United States split the singles matches against Spain Tuesday at the World Team Cup.
Sam Querrey leveled for the Americans by beating Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 6-4, after Spain's Nicolas Almagro saved a match point before overcoming Robby Ginepri 6-3, 5-7, 7-6 (4).
The best-of-three series will be decided by a doubles match Wednesday.
Also in the Red Group, the Czech Republic leads Australia 1-0 after Jan Hajek overwhelmed Peter Luczak 6-1, 6-2.
In the Blue Group, Germany leads Argentina 1-0 after Philipp Kohlschreiber defeated Horacio Zeballos 6-3, 6-4, and France and Serbia are level at 1-1.
Paul-Henri Mathieu beat Dusan Lajovic 6-2, 6-3 before Viktor Troicki leveled for Serbia by beating Jeremy Chardy 6-4, 6-2.
