Hussey and Nannes lead Aussies into Super Eights
Published in The Saudi Gazette on 06 - 05 - 2010

Michael Hussey struck a sparkling 47 not out and Dirk Nannes took four wickets to help Australia beat Bangladesh by 27 runs and qualify for the Super Eight stage of the Twenty20 World Cup Wednesday.
The one-day world champion was struggling at 65 for six after fine bowling and fielding from Bangladesh with two wickets apiece for Mashrafe Mortaza and Shakib Al Hasan.
Bangladesh, which has lost its last 12 matches in the shortest format of the game, was unable to make the most of that outstanding start and was eliminated from the tournament.
Hussey and Steven Smith added a vital 74 runs in seven overs to lift the Aussies to 141 for seven.
Bangladesh knew it had to win with a swift run-rate to qualify for the next stage ahead of Pakistan but it was never really in the running after slumping to 15 for four.
Skipper Shakib Al Hasan provided resistance with a spirited 28 from as many balls before he was caught superbly by Hussey at full stretch on the boundary.
Hussey also caught Mushfiqur Rahim, who had batted with character, off the bowling of his brother David and Bangladesh were bowled out for 114.
Adapt soon – Vettori
New Zealand captain Daniel Vettori has told his side it must be ready to adapt and possibly make changes after it eased through to the Super Eights phase of the World Twenty20.
“We have played Zimbabwe in both games so far, but we know we will face tough opposition, probably South Africa first up, so we have to adapt and be ready,” Vettori said after Tuesday's victory.
Turning to his chief wickettakers against Zimbabwe, the left-arm spinner added: “After a tough start it was good to fight back in those middle stages particularly with Nathan McCullum and Scott Styris, those two three-wicket overs really helped us.
Murali to remain in Windies
Sri Lanka's injured star spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is recovering slowly and will remain with the team in the Caribbean, Sri Lanka Cricket said Wednesday.
The 38-year-old Sri Lankan vice captain has made “significant progress” and is recovering from a groin injury picked up during last Friday's opening game against New Zealand, which Sri Lanka lost by two wickets.
Sri Lanka Cricket Monday said the off-spinner had been “advised to rest for two or three weeks.”
“Murali has begun his running program paving the way for some light bowling shortly,” team physiotherapist Tommy Simsek said in a statement released by Sri Lanka Cricket in Colombo.
“Muralitharan is to remain in the West Indies after making significant progress. The team support staff are keeping a close eye on Murali's rate of improvement,” Simsek said.
Sri Lanka will take on West Indies in Bridgetown, Barbados Friday. – AgenciesScoreboard
