After being extended to a 5 sets decision match, JBTP-Odracir overcame a stiff resistance by a fighting Jollibee 7 to bag the crown in the Higher Mix (HMX) category while Jollibee 6 cruised past JISTC for the B1 title with one set to spare at 3-1, Enjaz-Magics bagged the B2 category title and Jollibee 4, bowed out of the series on default in the deciding fifth set, in the finals of the 2nd Al-Baik Tennis Challenge at Albilad Hotel tennis courts.
A determined JBTP-Odracir took the first two sets with Mhedz Mabang and Ricky Mediavillo taking the initial encounter over Choi Escober and Randy Martin partnership via 8-6, as Joe Marie Sarduma and team captain Eric Diaz hurdled past Tony Mirasol and Jojo Valencia in a similar 8-6 fashion. With their backs against the wall, Jollibee 7 proved a hard nu to crack, as captain Francis Amor Idjao and MJ Melendrez kept their glimmering hopes alive with an 8-4 crucial win against the tough doubles pair of Ferdie Gaviola and Carl Assaf. Not to be outdone, the brothers tandem of Jun and Raymond Miguel buried Venus Layoso and George Bornales at 8-2 for the fourth set that leveled the match at 2-sets all. But the JBTP-Odracir pair of Danny Canoy and Sev Sumaya proved steadier, controlled the tempo of the fifth decision set, and breezed past Jojo Aran and Dondon Alcantara on an easy 8-2 win to claim the title in the Higher Mix category.
Unmoved with team Jollibee 7 losing the HMX crown, Jollibee 6 overpowered Jeddah International School Tennis Club (JISTC) at 3-1, for the crown in B1 category, as Tony Mirasol and Ruben Macalindog stamped their class against Rey Lacsina and Rommel Nadela in the first set with an 8-5 card, followed by Bien Villeta and Carl Abat registering an 8-5 win over Joe Bao and Rodan Roque. In the third set, JISTC refused to bog down as Tim San Gabriel and Sonny Valencia caught by surprise an off-form Jojo Aran and Dondon Alcantara with a convincing 8-2 score. In the fourth canto, Jollibee tightened the grip as Joel De Castro and Benny Lazarte took matters into their own hands, blasted the pair of Henry Sarmiento and Bong Mayoral into submission with an 8-2 winner for the clincher.
Enjaz-Magic came out with all guns blazing in the first set as the pair of Eugene Cagas and Darwish Bederi stopped the pair of Huzzam Basha and Ramzi Ali right on track at 8-2, but Jollibee 4 countered with a hard-earned victory by Tonton Pana and Joel Quimpo on an 8-7 tie-breaker against Benjie and Rey Marilao duo to pull level. In the crucial third set, Armand Bucad and Rex Almigo shot down the brothers tandem of Jun and Edwin Potestad of Jollibee with a punishing 8-4 to grab the driver's seat at 2 sets to 1. But Enjaz-Magics forfeited the fourth stanza on default that set the series at 2-all. The turn of events went in favor of Enjaz-Magics, as Jollibee 4 ran out of time to produce their players for the deciding set, and conceded the crown for Category B2 to Enjaz-Magics.
In related event to cap the successful tournament, Randy Martin and Froilan Lim emerged 2010 champion of the All ASTEC Officers Mini-Tournament, also held at Al-Bilad Tennis Courts.
JIS bags Class C
In the ladies division, host Jeddah International School (JIS) Tennis Club, had to rely on its solid doubles pair to snatch the Class C championship from King Abdul Aziz Medical City (KAMC) on a hard-earned 2-1 victory. Captain Weng Castro and Kit Camposano, came to the rescue as they anchored JISTC for the title clincher in the deciding third set on a hard-fought 8-6 off the fighting pair of Kit Naomi Quitoriano and Christine Estrada. Earlier, Jingo and Mitch Jereza drew first blood and pushed the hosts upfront by taming Happy Salvador and May Ann Exibia at 8-5, but KAMC reverberated back with Ashley Jao pummelling Bing Cabuquin with an 8-3 score in the second set singles match to level the count.
Organized and managed by the Association of Tennis Players (ASTEC) Jeddah, this event is supported by Al-Baik under the aegis of Bassam Al-Seyofi (PR Manager) and Ed Cabiedes (Area Manager) as main sponsors and is co
