SETE team blanked a stubborn SABB, to lead Group II at the end of eliminations round for Class C, SPTC had to come back from two sets down to win via decision over Enjaz-Magic 1 (3-2) in Group-III and team Shelter subdued a fighting ASTEC to grab the last berth and complete the cast for the quarterfinal round of the 2nd Al-Baik Tennis Challenge, played at Al-Bilad and Sheraton tennis courts.
Led by captain Jimboy Almoro BN JUNDI-SETE never gave Saudi British Bank (SABB) any breathing space as it exacted a 5-0 (8-3, 8-1, 8-3, 8-4, 8-0) punishment for its fourth victory in as many outings. The win solidified its group leadership with a 4-0 win-loss slate and eventually dislodged the unbeaten Group 1 leader Jollibee with a higher statistical points for the top spot in the quarterfinals. Jollibee settled for the No. 2 position in the eight-team line-up.
Meanwhile, Samahang Pinoy Tennis Club (SPTC) had to claw its way back from two sets down to win 3-2 (7-8, 7-8, 8-3, 8-4, 8-6) over a fighting Enjaz-Magic 1, and closed the eliminations with a 3-1 card to tie Group III leader Toyota Aljacs. The “win-over-the-other” rule gave Toyota Aljacs the top position in the group to qualify to third rank in the quarters, while SPTC settled for thefourth position.
In another do-or-die match, Shelter had to give its best and eventually took the game when it shut team ASTEC 5-0 (8-6, 8-7, 8-5, 8-3, 8-1). Finishing with a 2-2 slate in Group I, it tied with JRTC-2. Again, the win over the latter rule palced Shelter second in the group to qualify outright at No. 6 in the quarterfinals. Fifth spot was occupied by team JRTC-1 which was second in Group II. JRTC-2 having the highest statistical points among the third placers took seventh spot while Enjaz-Magic 1 having the second highest took the eighth position.
In other categories, Jollibee and Enjaz-Magic are assured of moving to the next round in B2 and Lower Mix levels. Positions in the quaterfinals will still be determined by their performances in the remaining games to calculate statistical points.
Spicing up the games are Al-Baik and Deltaz Marketing (Prince) gift certificates being raffled everyday during the games. Recent winners include Joey Ibay, Cynthia Mativo, Carlo Garbo, Star Pena, Abdur Rahman, Lina Dime, Beng Tumale and Vhoi Ortiz.
Organized and managed by the Association of Tennis Clubs (ASTEC) Jeddah, this team tennis tournament is supported by Al-Baik as the main sponsor, under the aegis of Bassam Al-Seyofi (PR Manager) and Edd Cabiedes (Area Manager). Co-sponsors are Prince/Deltaz, Al-Enjaz, Metro Bank (Philippines) and The Filipino Channel (TFC). __
