The dream opening pair of skipper Tendulkar and Jayasuriya began carefully but once Tendulkar was bowled by Joginder Sharma for 12, Jayasuriya simply exploded. It rained sixes and fours. The veteran Sri Lankan was at his attacking best and whipped every bowler mercilessly for 11 sixes and 9 fours from just 48 balls.
