A court in Madina has granted a 13-year-old girl a divorce from her 50-year-old husband after it was found that he beat her. Afrah was granted the divorce after a more than a year of marital life. She has been compensated by the District Court in Madina with SR1,200, at a rate of SR600 for each time her husband struck her. A medical report showed that she had been struck on the hip and neck. The judge issued the verdict to compensate her for the assault. The husband had earlier sworn to the court that he had not abused her. Afrah was granted the divorce and will now relinquish the remaining part of her SR40,000 dowry as demanded by her husband, to finalize the annulment of the marriage contract. Okaz interviewed the 5th year primary school pupil after the court proceedings. She said that she had lived in constant fear because he had beaten her several times. “Once he beat me severely because I wanted to go and visit his family. He left me at home and stormed out of the house. So I went to the neighbors of my family, as my family wasn't at home. When my mother returned and saw the marks from the beating she took me immediately to Al-Ansar Hospital, which carried out a check-up and issued a medical report on the bruises and physical harm I suffered.” Afrah's mother said that the last time he beat her, she took her daughter to the hospital and reported the incident to the police.
